The Nerdery - Overnight Website Challenge

Kansas City 2015, May 2-3

Urban Ranger Corps

The Urban Ranger Corps works with young men, 13-18, who live and attend school in the Kansas City urban core. We are currently working with 63 young men in high school and 44 in middle school. During the summer program they work on various community projects such as grass cutting and building and maintaining community gardens for which they receive a stipend. During the school year they are required to perform 20 hours of community service (10 for middle school youth). Staff works with them to ensure they are attending school and achieve the grades required to move to the next grade and/or graduate high school.

Some of our young men are involved in a Leadership Training Initiative, a curriculum designed to facilitate a learning process that integrates strong and dynamic training opportunities into the growth and development of each person involved and to provide a strong foundation of principles for leadership.

Educational experiences include sessions on: bullying, peer pressure, anti-drug use, anti-violence, leadership, financial matters and positive thinking. Juniors and Seniors are given an opportunity to visit local campuses to learn what it takes to be a college student (tuition, fees, room and board, etc.).

We have worked with 471 young men since our founding in 2005, and will work with 140 during our 2015-2016 program year.

What new functionality we are looking for

Our current website is static and not very user friendly. We work with young men who are curious, full of energy, and enthusiastic. We want our website to display these qualities. We want a website that:

• visitors will find easy to navigate and will provide them with all of the information about our program that they are seeking

• lively, exciting and vibrant to encourage visitors to learn more

• have a special page for the rangers only

• interactive

• easy to make changes to copy, photos, etc.

• maximizing our SEO and increasing our meta tags so people will be directed to our website

How the new functionality will help

A new, exciting and vibrant website will help us tell the story of our programs/activities and the young men we serve. Being able to tell our story is a means of attracting more donors, which means more funds to provide our services.

A more vibrant, living and exciting website will help us attract the younger generation who are the up and coming donors and volunteers. It will also provide us with a venue for our current and former rangers to interact with staff and one another.

Moving from a static website to a lively one is a giant step for us as we enhance all of our social media avenues.

This is a wonderful organization that helps youth learn the skills they need to succeed in life. The people that work with them have a way with the kids and a compassion for what they do. I would love to see this organization grow by getting it recognized and supported more. It could only benefit them to have a website that is noticed and makes it easy for all. I fully support the Urban Rangers and hope they win this golden opportunity

This organization does some amazing things with these young men. An updated website would allow them to reach more people in the community to make them aware of the great things happening at URC. On a personal level, I have seen photos of young men who may have crossed my path in another venue being rewarded for their success. You have no idea how proud I felt just knowing them and seeing that they are, indeed, on the right track. Too often, all a community sees is the unsavory side of young men's lives. The URC shows just the opposite and it should be recognized for the positive influence they have on these young men. Perhaps with the right backing, what they are doing could expand to include a corp for young women.

Congratulations URC! Keep up the good work!

Urban Rangers truly is a grassroots organization which has grown by word of mouth. We were introduced to Urban Rangers by a friend and found that it's purpose closely alligned with our personal beliefs about providing opportunities to youth to allow them to succeed. A new, more interactive website will allow Urban Rangers to better provide it's story to the public and continue to grow.

I adopted my grandson when he was 2 years old. He has some emotional and impulse disorders that he has been treated for and that has caused him lots of problems coping in school. We found out about the Urban Ranger Corp last school year as he became a freshman in high school. After researching the organization I completed an application and we attended an interview. The rest is history, my child's grades and disposition have made a turn around. He had never rode the public transportation alone before but put his fear aside and figured it out. This was his first paying job and he wanted so much to be successful. This year he is taking leadership classes and will be ready to be a group leader this summer. We as so grateful for the concern and encouragement that Urban Rangers has provided. This is a great organization for young men and is greatly needed in the Kansas City area.

The Urban Rangers program provides a much-needed opportunity for young men of our community to learn, to work, to give back to their community. As with many non-profits,they need to get their story out in the most effective and least expensive way. A strong, interactive website would help them do this. I strongly urge you to grant them the website.

What a wonderful program for our inner city youth. The program is outstanding; providing guidance, structure, belonging, education, respect and leadership development. It would be awesome if the website were beefed up for more interactivity for all connected. Truly a worthwhile investment for sure.

The Urban Ranger organization is concerned about the community. They empower young man to transform the lives and be productive members of society. The young man in this program are exposed to programming which keeps them focused on achieving various goals. Giving them a website would further enhance the organization's reach in the community. So many young man would benefit from becoming an Urban Ranger and ultimately the community as a whole would benefit. I strongly encourage the decision makers to take a good look at the Urban Rangers and grant them the website.

The Urban Ranger Corps mission is to help prepare at-risk inner city youth to be responsible and productive individuals as they prepare to become respectable adults. Swope Ridge Geriatric Center has been fortunate to benefit from this program. The Urban Ranger is part of our extended family. These young men do a variety of projects for us and they interact often with our residents. One of the young men that graduated from the program, became a full-time employee for our facility. I highly recommend you to grant this organization a website. It’s much needed for the community.

My son has been part of this organization for 2 years and the change and the growth that has happened for him is life changing. He values his community cares more about his grades and looks forward to working every summer with the team leads. I am glad there are organizations like this around that really care about our youths and making them productive citizens. I want all the best for them and if a website can help them reach more kids. Lets do it!!!

Urban Rangers Program has been very beneficial to me and my group of urban gardeners. I love the fact that this organization helps to beautify the area we live in. I have been a strong supporter for the last few years. It is a good thing for these young men to have strong role models in our community.

The Urban Ranger Corps provides the challenges, guidance, and role models that are needed for young men to be successful in life. This program has grown over the years, but still needs to grow even more. There are many youths who would benefit from this program if more applicants could be accepted. An improved website might help spread the word, and therefore increase the number of volunteers and donations. It could also be beneficial to the Rangers by improving communication, helping with scheduling etc. The Urban Ranger Corps is definitely a deserving organization.

I believe the Urban Rangers Corps does it right! It provides hope, opportunity, practical experience, discipline and education. I have supported them from their beginnings and continue to do so.

This organization is a great addition to our city. They make a difference in these young men's lives and teach them to become an active part of their community. They are mentored to become better people and to help others as they go. I have had contact with the young men and am very impressed with what they have learned. I'm sure their families are very proud.

I have met many of the Urban Ranger boys at the annual fundraising dinner and am impressed with their maturity and enthusiasm. One young man, almost bursting his buttons, told me he was off to Juilliard! Stories like that need to be told.

I thank god for this problem there is not alot of programs that help teach our youth. This program does a lot of things in the community. I wish this program could expand and help more youth.

The Urban Rangers promote all the right things for long-term success for participants. They learn the skills of good character, hard work and community service. Recently we have partnered with the U.R. to identify and mentor future BSPD Police Officers. Great leadership, wonderful goals and the ability to deliver - it doesn't get better than that! I have been involved in this program for a couple of years and my organization looks forward to their visit of our offices and warehouse every year. I take great pride in sitting in our conference room addressing their questions and comments regarding my experiences and stories as a young, southern black kid working towards becoming President/CEO of a company. The guidance, leadership and direction these young guys are given in this program will help in becoming the future leaders of our communities in the future.

They deserve a better website to show the community the good things they are doing.

I think Urban Rangers is one of the best practical offerings to young people in the Inner City. It is a wonderful way to give young men a skill which they can use to earn a living and support a family.

Any help they could receive would help develop and further their endeavor

Having been involved with URC for the last seven years I've met a lot of the young men who have gone through the program. It is always exciting to see those who have graduated high school and gone to college come back in the summer to work as Team Leaders and Assistant Team Leaders. They share their experiences and tell it like it is because they have "been there." URC is growing every year in the numbers they can serve. A new, exciting and vibrant website will help attract young men to the program as well as people who will donate to ensure this growth continues.

As a Site Supervisor for the Local Investment Commission (LINC) the Urban Rangers have been a great resource for the development and expansion of our Carver Urban Agriculture Institute. Over the past hree years the Rangers have worked side-by-side with residents in the Historic East Neighborhoods Coalition (HENC) to prepare, plant and maintain eleven community gardens in our neighborhoods and local schools. They have proven themselves to be young men of high character, excellent work ethic and a drive to succeed. Their work was so invaluable to HENC that they were written into a two urban agriculture grants to help support their efforts in the community. We too believe that they would greatly benefit from an improved website which would enable them to spread the word about the great work taking place in the lives of these young men.

Having been involved in several youth organizations over the years, I think that the Urban Ranger program is one of the best in fulfilling their mission. The young men they serve are taught valuable life skills that will stay with them for years to come. It's a perfect example of how giving a man a fish he eats for a day, if you teach him how to fish and he eats for a life time. Many graduates of the program are already returning to the neighborhood and are giving back what they learned from the Corps.

The Urban Rangers Corps is an incredible organization! I continue to be amazed with the amount of work they get done. The young men are taught life skills, discipline, work ethic, academic achievement, goal-setting and community service. This is truly an organization that the greater Kansas City area needs to know more about and needs to support.

As a former Board member of the Urban Ranger Corp (URC), I am proud to support their application for the website challenge! URC is an amazing organization doing amazing things to help uplift and groom young men into responsible, high-achieving, and caring members of our community.

The Urban Rangers are one of the best youth inspired organizations I know! My son participated in this group for his four years of High School and still looks to the Rangers for help as he is finishing up his first semester in college. Having a website that the rangers could stay connected with staff and past and present rangers to build their networking skills, ask questions, connect to resources, tutorials and the list could go on and on, Wow what a great investment this website could make. As a parent I could also use the website and see upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, connect with staff as well other ranger parents. The best part of all it would be a safe social media site where trusted information will be given and received. The Rangers have helped me and my son in so many ways, my son was lost and made many critical mistakes that could have taken him down a very different path but the Rangers especially Mr. Dickinson were right there every step of the way as we faught to save my child so if this website can take The Urban Rangers to a higher level and expand its reach to more young men then what are you waiting on, they need this website!

The Urban Ranger Corp of Kansas City does more than any other youth organization I know of in the Kansas City area. The URC program inspires hope, expands opportunities, teaches self discipline, increases self esteem and creates life expectations and strategies for brighter futures for the young men it serves. I currently have a former Urban Ranger working as a subcontractor and he is professional, knowledgable, capable and trustworthy. I proudly support the URC application for the website

I am honored to be associated with the Urban Ranger Corps as a board member. What attracted me to the organization is the easily recognizable growth in maturity, confidence and dependability that the rangers obtain by taking advantage of the services provided. I have seen it first hand and it is remarkable. This organization is making a difference in many lives.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help prepare at-risk inner city youth for responsible and productive futures through a program of disciplined work experience and service in their community; leadership development; and individualized planning for post-High School careers. Our goals for this program are to encourage these young to make positive life decisions and to achieve passing grades in school, and, after high school graduation, to enroll in college, enter the military or enter the work force.
