The Urban Ranger Corps works with young men, 13-18, who live and attend school in the Kansas City urban core. We are currently working with 63 young men in high school and 44 in middle school. During the summer program they work on various community projects such as grass cutting and building and maintaining community gardens for which they receive a stipend. During the school year they are required to perform 20 hours of community service (10 for middle school youth). Staff works with them to ensure they are attending school and achieve the grades required to move to the next grade and/or graduate high school.
Some of our young men are involved in a Leadership Training Initiative, a curriculum designed to facilitate a learning process that integrates strong and dynamic training opportunities into the growth and development of each person involved and to provide a strong foundation of principles for leadership.
Educational experiences include sessions on: bullying, peer pressure, anti-drug use, anti-violence, leadership, financial matters and positive thinking. Juniors and Seniors are given an opportunity to visit local campuses to learn what it takes to be a college student (tuition, fees, room and board, etc.).
We have worked with 471 young men since our founding in 2005, and will work with 140 during our 2015-2016 program year.
What new functionality we are looking for
Our current website is static and not very user friendly. We work with young men who are curious, full of energy, and enthusiastic. We want our website to display these qualities. We want a website that:
• visitors will find easy to navigate and will provide them with all of the information about our program that they are seeking
• lively, exciting and vibrant to encourage visitors to learn more
• have a special page for the rangers only
• easy to make changes to copy, photos, etc.
• maximizing our SEO and increasing our meta tags so people will be directed to our website
How the new functionality will help
A new, exciting and vibrant website will help us tell the story of our programs/activities and the young men we serve. Being able to tell our story is a means of attracting more donors, which means more funds to provide our services.
A more vibrant, living and exciting website will help us attract the younger generation who are the up and coming donors and volunteers. It will also provide us with a venue for our current and former rangers to interact with staff and one another.
Moving from a static website to a lively one is a giant step for us as we enhance all of our social media avenues.

Our mission is to help prepare at-risk inner city youth for responsible and productive futures through a program of disciplined work experience and service in their community; leadership development; and individualized planning for post-High School careers.
Our goals for this program are to encourage these young to make positive life decisions and to achieve passing grades in school, and, after high school graduation, to enroll in college, enter the military or enter the work force.
